From 08:00 - 08:30 AM, our tour guide and bus arrive at your hotel, marking the start of an unforgettable day exploring Hanoi.
The morning unfolds at the Ho Chi Minh Complex, where you pay a visit to the Mausoleum of Vietnam’s revered leader. You can admire the peaceful gardens, step into the simple stilt houses he once lived in, and admire the One Pillar Pagoda, an architectural gem dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy.
Note: Proper dress covering shoulders and knees is required. The Mausoleum closes on Mondays, Fridays, and from June 15 to August 15 each year, though the area remains open for photos.
Next, your guide leads you to the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. Here, vivid exhibitions highlight the diverse heritage of 54 ethnic groups. (On Mondays, the Women’s Museum is visited instead.)
By lunchtime, you sit down at a local restaurant to enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Vegetarian options are available upon request, ensuring a meal that suits everyone’s taste.
The afternoon begins at Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake. Standing on Golden Fish Island, this 6th-century pagoda exudes serenity and history. Soon after, you continue to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, where courtyards, pavilions, and stone steles honor generations of scholars.
Later, you enter Hoa Lo Prison, known in the colonial period as “Maison Centrale.” Today, its exhibits reveal powerful stories of struggle, resilience, and independence.
By 16:30, the bus brings you back to your hotel, giving you time to relax before check-out. Dinner is on your own.
As the evening settles, at 21:00, your driver picks you up for the transfer to Hanoi Station. Boarding the Chapa Express overnight train to Lao Cai (22:00 - 06:00), you settle into a shared four-berth cabin. The rhythmic sound of the train accompanies you into the night, carrying you northward to the mountains of Sapa.

This morning we will leave the city by private vehicle to visit the amazing tunnel network of Cu Chi. This incredible system, covering almost 250km in length was shelter to over 16,000 Vietcong guerrillas during the wars. Initially started in 1948 to provide shelter against the French air and ground sweeps, the network went on to serve as communication routes, storage facilities, hospitals and living quarters for Vietnamese fighters throughout the American war. If you are interested (and game) you can even descend into the tunnels to learn more about the harsh conditions faced by Vietcong guerrillas who lived there. Return to the city center and take a short rest. Lunch on your own.
In the evening, you will be transferred to the bank of Saigon River and board the Bonsai Cruise to enjoy the buffet dinner while slowly cruising on the boat trip along the river. Then transfer back to the hotel to overnight.

Vietnam's weather differs greatly from region to region. Depending on where and when you're going to visit, make sure you prepare for the weather before you go.
North: Best time to visit is during spring (from February and April) and autumn (from September to November). The temperatures are more moderate with lighter rainfall
Central: Best time to visit is between January and August when the weather is dry with no heavy rains
South: The best time to visit the region is during the dry season, between December and April when the city experiences warm weather without rain showers.
If you're planning to visit the whole country, it is possible to travel to any part of Vietnam during any season.
Depending on your place of choice and your interest, the duration could be varied. Normally, for first- time travelers, it will take you about 10- 14 days to discover the must-see attractions throughout Vietnam.
There are two available methods for passport holders from South Africa to choose to apply for a visa to Vietnam. You can either apply for your visa at the local embassy or obtain a visa on arrival with a visa letter.
