About the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
Outside the travel trade, PATA is rarely mentioned. Inside it, the name carries as much weight as any in this part of the world.
The Pacific Asia Travel Association was founded in 1951 and has worked from Bangkok since 1998. It is a not-for-profit body whose purpose, for 75 years, has been to see tourism across Asia Pacific grow responsibly. Governments and private companies sit in the same rooms, share the same research and follow the same training, and the result is a set of standards the whole region can point to. Membership is organised across six categories and includes national tourism boards, airlines, airports, hotel groups, tour operators, cruise lines, travel technology companies and universities.
PATA's reach extends to Africa as well: the association has a long-standing partnership with the Africa Travel Association to strengthen tourism links between the two regions. PATA also endorses the UN Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and asks its members to do the same – a standard we were already holding ourselves to before we applied.
