Welcome to Mandalay. Upon your arrival, set off your sightseeing tour of the city
Start your tour with a visit to the well known Mahamuni Pagoda -one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Burma. The temple houses the Mahamuni Buddha image, the most highly revered Buddha image in the country. The Mahamuni Buddha is covered with a thick layer of gold leaf of about 15 centimeters. Continue onto Kuthodaw Pagoda which comprises of a gilded pagoda, hundreds of shrines housing inscribed marble slabs and several pavilions. The pagoda is also called “the world’s largest book”, named after the 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings.
Proceed to the Shwenandaw Monastery - the most significant monastery of Mandalay. The Shwenandaw is a wonderfully fragile yet grand example of 19th century Burmese teak architecture and also a significant masterpiece of the wood-carving art.
Wrap your excursion with a visit to Mandalay Palace - the last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy.
Return to your hotel to relax.
After breakfast at the hotel, continue your journey with a tour of the former capitals including Ava, Sagaing and Amarapura.
This morning, make your way crossing a bridge over the Irrawaddy River to reach Sagaing. Sagaing was the royal capital for only three years but it remains an important spiritual town attracting many people to meditate in its monasteries. One of the most captivating places which contain hundreds of stupas is Sagaing Hill. This hill has numerous pagodas, monasteries and meditation centers known as a peaceful place for Buddhist studies. In this trip, you will explore some famous pagodas in the region including Swan Oo Pon Nya Shin and U Min Thone Sae.
Continue to visit Sagaing’s local market where you can find a wide range of items for sale such as locally made pottery, silver and other handicrafts. You also have chance to visit a pottery village to observe the production of water pots.
Keep driving south to the capital of Ava. Once arrival, take a short ferry ride to cross the river. When reaching the other side, get on a horse cart to visit the wooden Bagaya Monastery and the Royal Palace and Fort. The horse cart ride takes you further into small villages of the Burmese countryside which offer a great glimpse of local life. Make a top for lunch in Ava.
Transfer back to the city with a stop at Amarapura. It was the capital of Burma in the early 19th century and is the home of a famous bridge. The main feature of the charming little town of Amarapura is its many workshops. You will stop to visit a silk weaving workshop before moving onto U Bein Bridge - the longest teak bridge in the world. Stroll along the bridge to enjoy the stunning views of the surroundings when the sun comes to close.
In the late afternoon, head back to Mandalay.
This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight. End of tour.
